Do You Have to Pay for Paramedic Care After a Car Accident in Florida?

Depending on the circumstances you may be responsible for paramedic care or ambulance transportation fees.

If you’ve been in a car accident in Florida, one of the first questions you may have after being checked by paramedics is: “Am I going to get a bill for this?” The answer depends on whether you were treated on the scene, transported by ambulance, or both.

Paramedic Care at the Scene (No Transport)

Even if you don’t ride in the ambulance, you may still receive a bill. Florida EMS providers often charge what’s called a “treatment without transport” fee or “assessment fee.”

  • This applies if paramedics check your vital signs, administer oxygen, dress a wound, or otherwise provide care.

  • The fee can range from $100 to $500+, depending on the county or city.

In other words, saying “no thanks” to the ride doesn’t necessarily mean you walk away without charges.

Ambulance Transport Fees

If you accept transport to the hospital, the charges increase:

  • Base transport fee: usually $400 to $1,200, depending on the level of care provided (basic life support vs. advanced life support).

  • Mileage charges: calculated per mile from the accident scene to the hospital.

These charges are in addition to whatever the hospital bills once you arrive.

How Are EMS Bills Paid in Florida?

Florida is a no-fault state, which means your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is responsible for paying most initial medical expenses:

  • PIP pays 80% of reasonable and necessary medical expenses up to $10,000.

  • EMS bills (whether for treatment at the scene or ambulance transport) are typically submitted to your auto insurance first.

  • If costs exceed your PIP limit, your health insurance or MedPay coverage may step in.

  • Ultimately, if another driver caused the crash, these expenses may be recoverable as part of your personal injury claim.

Key Takeaways for Florida Accident Victims

  • Yes, you can be billed for paramedic care at the scene, even without ambulance transport.

  • Ambulance transport adds separate charges for base service and mileage.

  • PIP insurance is your first line of coverage, but other sources may be responsible if costs exceed PIP.

  • These expenses may be recovered from the at-fault driver’s insurance in a personal injury claim.
